Raise your hand if you’ve heard this myth before: “IHSS is only for kids of a certain age range.” We’ve been there, and we’ve heard it all. In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) can be a lifeline for many families across California raising kids with disabilities, providing the specialized child care our kids need right at home, but it can also be overwhelming and confusing (do we need an algebra refresher just to figure out how to calculate hours?!). On the other hand, there are also many parents who don’t even realize that their child would qualify for IHSS and many other available resources and supports.
We want every family (yes, you!) to understand and identify what supports are available to them, from IHSS to lesser-known funding programs to useful tools and resources. There are many supports in California for families raising kids with disabilities — and we don’t want you to miss a thing.
Do you have questions about IHSS eligibility, how hours are calculated, whether young kids can qualify, how to demonstrate the need for more services, and more? We sat down with Undivided Public Benefits Specialist Lisa Concoff Kronbeck to get answers to some common questions — and misconceptions — about IHSS. Join us as we bust 14 myths about IHSS for minors!
If your child receives IHSS and you’re a paid parent provider, the IHSS Career Pathways program provides training opportunities to improve your skills. Read up on available course pathways, training time pay and incentives, and reporting courses on your timesheet in our article IHSS Career Pathway Courses: Parent Training and Incentives.
Note that the Career Pathways program is slated to end in September 2024, so if you want to claim all the incentives, you have until April 30 to complete the specialized pathways courses and claim the incentives no later than November 30, 2024.
We know that the IHSS Career Pathways program can be tricky to navigate, so we’re ramping up support to help parent providers access these benefits! Undivided members can access a step-by-step guide to participating in Career Pathways training, get 1:1 Navigator support signing up for classes, and access our FAQ database answering the most commonly asked questions about attending and getting paid for courses.
