“I can’t wait to do my algebra homework!” said few kids ever. Let’s be real — math, especially algebra, can feel intimidating on a good day and completely overwhelming on the tough ones, especially if your child struggles with it. Many of us grew up memorizing abstract formulas and racing through problems, wondering, “When will I ever use this?” Have things changed for our kids? What’s the purpose of math instruction, and how can we help our kids succeed and feel good about math — whether it’s through their IEP or simply helping with homework at home?
Well actually, math — and how we teach it — has come a long way. We now know so much more about how disabilities (dyscalculia anyone?) impact math learning and how to support kids through mathematical standards, personalized strategies, accommodations, assistive technology, and the right IEP goals.
This week, we’re exploring how to make math meaningful and functional for your child, how to write great IEP math goals (with examples!), fun resources you can use to support their math learning, and where algebra fits into all of this.
Check out these articles that cover everything you need to know about math, from what goes into crafting great math goals, how algebra should be taught to kids with disabilities, Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs), math apps and tech, and more.
