Don’t miss out on these disability-friendly programs in the SoCal area
It may be the beginning of spring, but now is the perfect time for summer camp registration! You probably have a million things on your plate, but summer is right around the corner, and finding ways to fill in the looming months ahead of no school with activities often includes finding the perfect camp for our kiddos (and registering early because they fill up fast!).
Some of our kids have unique needs, preferences, or habits, and the thought of sending them off to camp may spark feelings of concern, anxiety, and maybe even a bit of panic. Some of us may not even consider camp an option. Summer camp lists abound (you’ve probably seen one or two already) but more often than not, they aren’t inclusive of all kids, making the whole experience feel daunting. We get it because we’ve been there. So this week, we’re bringing you the scoop on a variety of summer camps in 2023 that are accessible for our kids and their unique needs.
We’ve rounded up virtual and in-person day and sleepaway camps in the SoCal area — from therapy-based play to social skills to adaptive sports. Because camp is for EVERYONE.
Recreational Camps and Classes
Sleepaway Camps and Family Weekends
Social Skills Camps and Classes
(These camps are mostly in the Los Angeles area. If you’re interested in learning about accessible camps in a different area, reach out about getting a custom research report!)
Wondering which camp is right for your kid? Whether you’re a camp connoisseur, packing up your kid’s camp backpack for the first time, or still apprehensive about the idea of camps, exploring what’s available and finding the right fit (and funding options!) can often feel like an overwhelming task. How can you be sure your child will be able to fully participate, enjoy themselves, and be meaningfully included? The right camp should support your child’s needs, strengths, and interests, but it’s important to start your search early and ask the right questions.
To help make the process a little easier, we’ve put together a printable tip sheet (with room to take notes) outlining the top questions you can consider asking potential summer camps — from inclusion to safety concerns to accommodations. Summer may still feel like a lifetime away, but remember: camp registration is happening now, and many camps are first come, first serve.
As always, please reach out if you have any camp experiences, advice, or tips that might help other parents on their search for summer camps. And if there are any fabulous camps we left off our list that you and your kiddos love, let us know! Because every child should experience the fun and structured freedom camps provide — scavenger hunts, swim races, dance routines, and all!
