Can I ask for an IEP accommodation not to memorize?

For some of our kids, memorizing is very challenging, but teachers may want students to memorize concepts such as multiplication tables. It's possible to ask for an IEP accommodation for your child not to memorize. However, go beyond that and think about how to help your child learn and demonstrate their learning.

If memorizing is not working, look at what does work. You can also check out the book Rethinking Disability and Mathematics by Rachel Lambert. Other accommodations might be doing tests in a separate area from other students or having different time parameters if the other students are being tested on memorization.
