Parent Question

Can I ask my child's school aide to do respite outside of school hours?

Published: Apr. 3, 2025Updated: Jun. 6, 2025

It can be difficult to find respite providers who are qualified and capable of caring for our kids, so you may wonder if it's possible to approach your child's school aide about paying them as a child care provider outside of school hours.

Some schools do not allow direct communication between aides and parents. However, if you are in contact with the aide, you can ask them directly about serving as a respite provider, rather than going through your child's teacher or case manager. Your child's aide might also have recommendations for other people who could be respite providers.
