Parent Question

Can I use a friend's home address so my child can attend a different school?

Published: Oct. 3, 2025Updated: Oct. 3, 2025

Some parents wonder if they can use a friend or other family member's home address so that their child can attend a different school than they would normally be zoned for. We advise families to be honest rather than lie about their home address and risk fraud. If you want your child to attend another school and your child has an IEP, this is an issue to discuss with your IEP team.

Another aspect to consider is that if your child accesses public benefits such as Regional Center, IHSS, or SSI, those agencies require your home address, so you want to make sure you are supplying correct information to all organizations involved in your child's care.
