Can my adult child stay on my insurance after a divorce?
If you are divorcing your child's other parent, you may wonder whose insurance plan will cover your child after the divorce, especially if they are an adult.
It may depend on what type of plan you have. For instance, if you are on an individual/family plan through your state's healthcare marketplace, you can keep your child on your insurance on as long as they are still a dependent under your tax return.
If you are on an individual/family plan NOT through your state's healthcare marketplace, or a plan from your employer, you may be able to keep your child covered without needing to explain anything. It is unlikely you would need to provide proof of them being a dependent. Most plans will allow adult children on their parents' health insurance until age 26.
For a more detailed answer, you can reach out to your health plan, or to your employer if it is an employer-provided plan.
