Undivided Resources
Parent Question

Can my child access a 1:1 aide at school dances or other extracurriculars?

Published: Feb. 3, 2022Updated: Sep. 20, 2024

Remember that supports and services provided in academic settings are also available during extracurriculars — this includes sports and dances. If your teen has qualified for a 1:1 aide or other medical and support staff during the school day, you have the right to ask for them to be present at school dances and other extracurriculars.

If the school is reluctant to provide accommodations like an aide at school-sponsored event outside of instructional time, here is a sample letter written by an Undivided education advocate with some references to ADA and IDEA related to accommodations that may be helpful.
