Can my child get a 1:1 aide if they're homeschooled?
If your child is homeschooled and you want to request a 1:1 aide, whether your school district will provide one depends on your child's homeschool setup.
Usually, people homeschool their children in one of two ways. They can homeschool by filing a PSA and creating their own private school. In these cases, it’s private placement by choice, and the school district doesn’t have to provide anything.
The other very popular option is to homeschool via charter. Students may enroll in an independent study placement at a charter school, which is a public school. These work a little differently because the parent is essentially the teacher, and the independent study is a 1:1 situation where parents decide how they will educate their child and turn in samples monthly to a teacher.
The reason charters generally don’t offer 1:1 aides is that classes and options are all independent of the charters and by choice of the parents, so the school doesn’t have to provide the 1:1 for classes through different enrichment or learning centers by choice.
For another type of homeschooling setup, you may want to discuss your situation with an education advocate to see what you might be able to obtain through the school district.
