Can my child get a high school diploma without completing A-G requirements?
A through G are requirements for entrance to California universities like CSU or UC. A student does not necessarily have to fulfill these requirements to graduate high school because if they get a high school diploma, they can go to community college and later transfer to CSU or UC if desired. However, many high schools have aligned their diploma requirements to A through G. If they have done this, then the student has to complete the school's requirements to get a diploma. This includes if they are homeschooled through a charter.
If a student with disabilities cannot complete the A-G courses, there are alternatives:
- The school can request a waiver for a particular student for Algebra or any other class that is the obstacle and add a vocational requirement instead. The board of education for the school has to request the waiver from the state board of education.
- The student can get a diploma using the alternative pathway, but they need to have a significant cognitive disability to qualify.
- The student can get a certificate of completion instead of a diploma.
