Parent Question

Can my child get extra IHSS personal care hours for extraordinary need?

Published: Jun. 20, 2025Updated: Aug. 9, 2025

If your child is authorized to receive IHSS personal care hours but does not qualify for protective supervision or paramedical services, you can request extra hours if your child has extraordinary need in one or more areas.

If your child has already reached the maximum in certain categories, IHSS may award additional hours in other categories. For example, if there are a lot of toileting issues that necessitate cleanup, IHSS might increase the ranking in bathing and/or dressing as well; they might also include laundry, which isn’t usually offered to younger children.

For more information about IHSS functional ranking and how many hours to expect, see our full article In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS): Learn the Essentials of Eligibility.
