Can my child have a 1:1 aide in an adult transition program?
Regardless of whether your child is in kindergarten or in a high school transition program for students age 18-22, the I in IEP stands for individualized. You should work with the school to determine the supports that are appropriate for your child. If the school offers a support or placement that is not appropriate, be prepared to present why it is not appropriate and ask for what your child needs.
Services cannot be taken away without the parent consent. If your child already has a 1:1, that aide support won't end just because they enter an adult transition program. If the school wants to remove the 1:1, you as the parent can disagree. If your child doesn’t already have a 1:1 and you want to request an aide, an assessment will need to be done to determine need.
All that being said, you should consider if an aide is really necessary. Unless it is for health and safety, having an aide at this age increases the likelihood of not having any meaningful level of independence in adulthood. This may be the time to let it go.
