Can my child have an aide during extended school year (ESY)?
Published: Mar. 21, 2025
You can request it, but the school not required to provide a 1:1 aide in extended school year because ESY is considered special education. However, there are more adults in ESY, so your child may not need a 1:1 even if they have one during the normal school year.
You may be able to request summer school instead of ESY, which would be general education and may be at a different location. You might be able to get a push-in 1:1 aide assigned for summer school, but it would likely be a long battle.
Remember that the goal of a 1:1 aide is to eventually lose the dependence on an aide, so you could talk to your IEP team about other supports to fade out the aide.
