Can my child qualify for SNAP benefits if they get SSI?
Published: Jun. 10, 2026Updated: Jun. 10, 2026
SSI isn't an automatic qualifier for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Whether an individual qualifies is based on the amount they receive from SSI and if they have any other sources of income. SNAP will also take into consideration whether the person pays rent.
If your adult child lives at home, they need to be their own "household," so all of the household questions on the SNAP application are about the child and their income, not the parents'. They need to buy and prepare their food separately from others in the household.
