Parent Question

Can my teen receive IHSS protective supervision if they forget to eat and don't take care of themselves?

Published: May. 16, 2025Updated: Jun. 6, 2025

If you're applying for IHSS protective supervision because your young adult has a hard time taking care of themselves, such as not eating, keep in mind that protective supervision means the person requires supervision 24/7 for their deficits. If a person simply forgets to eat, IHSS would say the person needs supervision at predictable times, namely meal times. You could make the argument that all of the things add up to 24/7 in combination with potentially dangerous actions, but if it’s solely an issue of not being able to care for themselves, IHSS will likely just give hours in the various activities of daily living but not protective supervision.
