Parent Question

Can Regional Center fund genetic testing?

Published: Jun. 4, 2025Updated: Aug. 9, 2025

You may wonder whether Regional Center will fund genetic testing for your child. In general, you are expected to use private insurance and/or Medi-Cal to pay for genetic testing. If you are denied, Regional Center may be able to fund the testing.

Lisa Concoff Kronbeck, Undivided's Public Benefits Specialist, notes that in certain circumstances, the Regional Center may assist with prenatal diagnosis in pregnancies where there is a high likelihood of a genetic disorder that would result in the child being eligible for Regional Center services, such as when a parent is a known carrier of a genetic condition.

Note that the Regional Center serves only individuals with developmental disabilities, so a child with a genetic condition that impacts them medically but not developmentally will not be eligible for Regional Center services.
