Can Regional Center help my child with social skills?
Social skills therapy is “structured programming in either an individual or group format that primarily addresses significant deficits” in engagement and awareness of other people, play skills, social communication skills, and social interaction skills.
If your child is a Regional Center client with a need for social skills development, you may be able to get social skills services funded by the Regional Center. Note that social skills services are typically not funded for children under age 5.
It's also important to note that social skills and social recreation are two different areas of funding for Regional Center clients; they address different things. Some Regional Centers will provide social skills classes if they are necessary to aid the client in meeting social goals articulated in the IPP. In order to requesting social skills services from Regional Center, your child's IPP should have relevant goals. For example, if the IPP shows that your child needs explicit instructions and needs to be able to recall and use the skills in other environments, you can write a goal that corresponds to social skills services.
