Can Self-Determination Program funds be used for a live-in provider?
Published: Feb. 13, 2026Updated: Feb. 23, 2026
Yes, some parents are able to include an au pair, nanny, or live-in provider under their child's Self-Determination Program spending plan. The rates for a live-in provider are based on the rates for traditional services.
When using an au pair, make sure you're working with an FMS that knows how to do this; there are laws around au pairs because part of their pay is room and board.
