Can we appeal if DOR wants to close my child's case?
The California Department of Rehabilitation has a limited budget, so they may try to close your case by saying the needs in your individual plan for employment (IPE) have been addressed and you don't need their services anymore. They will say, "You can always reapply," and that is true, but then your level of needs might be waitlisted because of their order of prioritizing client needs.
Transition Consultant Joanna Kent says, "I always tell people, you need to keep checking in with DOR because they can close your case and will so quickly."
If they made an effort to contact you and you did not check in, they would have proof that you were not compliant and thus might close your case. If you have proof you were responsive, then definitely appeal your case closure. You can't just say, "I didn't know," because it is part of what is agreed upon. Here is Disability Rights California's resource on this topic.
