Do I need to specify an aide for extracurriculars in the IEP?
Published: Jun. 16, 2026Updated: Jun. 16, 2026
If your child has an aide during the school day written into the IEP, the school also needs to provide an aide during after-school extracurriculars such as clubs or teams. Special education law requires the same supports to be available for extracurricular activities.
You should request that this service be written into the IEP. It doesn’t have to be written as a number of minutes; the IEP could include a sentence such as "The aide will be available for any extracurricular activities the student wishes to participate in." If you get pushback because the school doesn't want to write that in, ask why.
