Do IEPs expire?

Published: May. 19, 2026Updated: May. 19, 2026

Some parents transferring between schools may wonder if their child's last IEP will be honored by the new school. IEPs don't "expire," so whatever is your child's last signed IEP should be presented to the new school. The school will need to follow the last signed IEP to the best of their ability until they can have a new IEP meeting (typically within 30 days). The school might want to do new assessments, especially if the last signed IEP was more than one year ago.

For more information about transferring school districts with an IEP, see our full article.
