How can I get my child's school to be more communicative with me?
If you want to improve communication with your child's school, start by figuring out how your child's teacher wants to communicate. Some teachers prefer email, and others like to use different apps/platforms.
Lisa M. Carey, Undivided Non-Attorney Advocate, recommends asking open-ended questions to open more channels of communication with your child's teacher. For example, don’t ask, “Are you using my child's IEP accommodations?” Instead, ask, “Which accommodations are most helpful for my child?”
Carey also recommends to make sure that you compose and read your emails carefully so that you come across as collaborative instead of “catching them.” You don’t want to be in an adversarial relationship when you could instead be providing each other with valuable insights about your child's learning style and support needs.
