Parent Question

How can I talk to other kids' parents about my child's disability?

Published: Feb. 21, 2025

If your child is participating in a general education classroom, you may want to help educate your child's classmates and even their parents about your child's disability. Our article Nurturing Disability Acceptance in Your Child’s School has plenty of ideas for how you and your child can talk to their peers about their disability in a way that meaningfully includes them and creates a positive experience for all involved.

If you want to write a parent-to-parent letter, your child's "All About Me" can be a great place to start by introducing your child's strengths and likes in addition to their disability. Our article How to Talk About Disability is another good resource for language to use in your letter.

It can be helpful to talk about how including your child in a gen ed classroom is beneficial not just for your child but for their peers as well. Be sure to check out our article Inclusion 101 for resources about inclusion that you can share with other parents.
