How do I help my child have easier dentist appointments?

Published: Apr. 10, 2025

Sitting in a dentist’s chair while a stranger touches their mouth with noisy tools can easily lead to sensory overwhelm for kids, so here are resources and ideas to help make dentist visits easier:

  1. Find a dentist who is comfortable working with the supports your child needs.
  2. Prime with books, videos, Social Stories, and pretend play.
  3. Visit the dentist’s office before the appointment.
  4. Plan an activity or a reward that your child can look forward to after the appointment.
  5. Count down to your child’s appointment and make it seem exciting.
  6. Pack a bag with comfort items to bring to the appointment.
  7. Offer your child choices.
  8. Be present with your child during the procedure.
  9. Discuss how the appointment went.
  10. Practice good oral care between dental visits.
