Parent Question

How do I help my homeschooled child socialize when they don't like park days?

Published: Oct. 18, 2024Updated: Oct. 18, 2024

Many homeschooling families like to meet up for park days to socialize, but that's not the right fit for every child. Smaller groups or experiences that cater to interests can be helpful, like parallel play-type situations with Legos or online meetups. You might meet a core group of people and set up your own meetups separately. You can reach out on parent Facebook groups or locally and ask if there are any families that would want to do a smaller meetup.

Another option is to arrange for enrichment classes with a core group of kids so that they get familiar with each other and can socialize. You could try calling a local science center to see what minimum number of kids needed for class, how much, and try it for one class. If your child is homeschooled via public charter, you might be able to use charter funds to pay for it.
