How do I prepare my child for the transition from preschool to kindergarten?
Published: May. 20, 2026Updated: May. 20, 2026
If your child is preparing to transition from preschool to kindergarten, you can help them get ready. In kindergarten, there might be more of an expectation to sit independently for longer. To prepare, you can work with your child over the summer, such as doing some worksheets at the table. You may need to work up to that if they need behavior modification to help get in the habit of sitting at the table. You can also work on asking for breaks versus getting up and taking off. If your child is nonspeaking, work on different communication modalities (e.g. sign, AAC, etc).
