How long should it take to process my IHSS application before the home visit?

Published: Aug. 28, 2025Updated: Feb. 23, 2026

Once you have submitted your application, IHSS should get back to you to schedule the home visit within a few months. There is no specific timeline, but Undivided families have waited anywhere from one to four months. Public Benefits Specialist Lisa Concoff Kronbeck says, "It shouldn’t be taking a very long time if all the paperwork was submitted." After you have submitted your application double-check with your county IHSS office that all your documentation was received. If you have been waiting more than a few months, follow up with the office.

If you already have IHSS and you submitted paperwork to apply for protective supervision and/or paramedical services, you should receive a decision in a few weeks. If you haven’t heard back, call and make sure the form made it into your file. If it has been over a month, you can call and ask to speak to the supervisor to find out what the delay is. It isn’t unheard of to take over a month.
