Parent Question

How many SAI minutes should my child have in their IEP?

Published: Nov. 5, 2024

If you're wondering how to determine the appropriate number of SAI minutes for your child's IEP, know that this is an individualized answer. There should be goals based on all areas of need. Look at the number of academic goals your child has, and ask yourself:

  • Are the goals addressing all areas of need?
  • Is the student making progress on the goals?

If not, then something needs to be reworked.

You may also want to consider whether services are push-in or pull-out. Sometimes, too much pull-out time causes a student to fall further and further behind because they’re missing out on valuable classroom instruction.

There is no formula for calculating what would be an "appropriate" amount of time since IEPs are individualized to the child's needs.

If you feel like your child needs more service minutes, you can focus on ensuring there are goals to support all areas of need.
