Parent Question

How much math does my child need to take to graduate high school?

Published: May. 23, 2025Updated: Aug. 9, 2025

How much math your child requires to graduate high school in California depends on their path to a diploma.

If your child is working toward the alternate path to a diploma, they need to do two years of high school math, and at least one has to be Algebra 1 or Mathematics 1. For example, a student could take two years of SAI Algebra to fulfill this requirement.

If your child is working toward a standard diploma, the state requirements are two years of math, including Algebra 1. It's possible to get a waiver for Algebra 1, but it's determined on a case-by-case basis.

Some high schools in California follow A-G requirements, which include both Algebra 1 and Intermediate Algebra in addition to geometry.
