How to Try Out Independent Study Before It’s Written in the IEP

Mark Woodsmall, attorney, explains how a diagnostic placement allows parents and school districts to temporarily try a different setting, such as independent study, to gather data and determine whether it’s effective. Importantly, a diagnostic placement does not change the student’s official FAPE offer—“stay put” remains the last agreed-upon and implemented placement.
