IEP services are meant to help a child make progress on their goals. In general, supplementary aids and services support a student in accessing the general education curriculum, while related services support a student in benefiting from special education. Top Parent Questions

How do I know whether my child has enough services in their IEP?
When it comes to what the law says, a student must make “meaningful progress” in meeting their IEP goals.
What if a school isn't providing supports for extracurricular activities?
If your school district is denying your child’s right to participate in extracurricular activities, regulations under IDEA and the Americans with Disabilities Act offer protections and enforcement procedures. You can file a complaint with one of several organizations.
How does my child qualify for a 1:1 aide?
Before your child can get support from a 1:1 aide, your district will likely want to conduct an assessment to determine whether your child qualifies for the support. After receiving the results of the assessment, the team will determine which type of aide or support your child requires.
Can training for teachers or aides be written into an IEP?
Providing a gen ed teacher with time to consult with the child’s special education teacher can help the gen ed teacher learn strategies to have more successful interactions with the child. These consultation periods should be written directly into the child’s IEP.
Can an IEP provide training for parents?
An IEP can provide training to assist parents in understanding the needs of their child and help parents acquire the necessary skills that will allow them to support the implementation of the IEP. This support can take the form of counseling or training and should be written into the IEP.
What are Supplementary Aids and Services?
The Supplementary Aids and Services section of the IEP will include information about modifications, accommodations, and any assistive technology the child might need. In addition, this portion includes any needed parent (or teacher) training.
