youthcamps@recreation.ucla.edu

UCLA Recreation has a variety of programs available to staff and students as well as the public. Both their youth programs and summer camps are open to the public, with their summer camps providing a variety of recreational and educational camps each year. While their summer camps are not specifically designed for campers with disabilities, their inclusion policy centers “social inclusion through shared experiences” and works with families to make that happen. Families will meet with staff prior to registration to make sure the program is a good fit and to make arrangements for accommodations. During this sampler camp, kids learn the fundamentals of watersports like kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and sailing. Campers then practice their new skills through water activities, land-based learning, team-building challenges, games, and more.

Sailing Camp

221 Westwood Plaza
Los Angeles, CA 90095
(310) 206-4000
youthcamps@recreation.ucla.edu

UCLA’s recreation department offers several programs that are open to the public. This includes their summer camps, which are a part of their youth programs. While they are not designed specifically for disabilities like some other UCLA programs and services are, their inclusion policy promotes “social inclusion through shared experiences.” If a prospective camper has a disability or need, camp staff will meet with the family to make sure it’s a good fit and that the proper accommodations are set up. Their sailing camp teaches pre-teens and teens “hands-on skills in seamanship, teamwork, and sportsmanship” through a combination of land and water exercises. They do not require campers to have previous sailing experience to participate and will help beginners “advance to intermediate and more technical lessons.”
