Sample Letter to Give Notice to Record an IEP Meeting
When you and your school team schedule an IEP team, you can give advance notice of your intent to record the meeting. Federal special education law (IDEA) does not specify whether parents can record an IEP meeting, so whether you can record depends on your state. In California, for example, you have the right to make an audio recording of an IEP meeting as long as you provide the school district with at least 24 hours' notice.
Here is an example letter or email to notify your IEP team:
I look forward to seeing you on [DATE] at [TIME] for [STUDENT]'s IEP. I am bringing my advocate, [NAME], who is copied on this email, so please add them to the meeting invite.
Please provide a draft of the present levels and proposed goals prior to the meeting so that I am prepared to participate.
Please note that I plan to audio record the meeting.
Thank you,
[PARENT NAME]
