Sample Letter to Request Comp Ed
The process of requesting comp ed is going to look a little different depending on each school district and situation. Start by asking about it at your next IEP meeting. In some cases, it’s extremely clear that a student didn’t receive a service they’re entitled to, and schools will offer additional therapy hours or services to make up for their loss. In other cases, you’ll want to submit a request for comp ed in writing. Keep your letter as direct and concise as possible.

RE: Mary Jones
Dear Ms. Smith,
I am writing to request compensatory education for missed and/or inadequate IEP services. Mary should receive the following or Specialized Academic Instruction (SAI) and related services:
- Orton Gillingham reading Intervention: 20 minutes daily
- Speech and language (push in): 2 x 30 minutes weekly
Due to Mrs. Bellingham being absent since the beginning of November, Mary does not appear to have received OG training for almost three months. It also appears that the Speech Therapist, Mrs. Lincoln, has been providing services in her speech classroom throughout the year, while the IEP states “in a regular classroom” and has a note (push-in). Please provide logs for both services to establish what service minutes have been provided and where.
I am requesting that the IEP team meet to discuss how compensatory instruction will be provided. Please schedule this meeting as soon as possible. (Please note that it is easier for Tom, Mary’s father, to join us for the meeting if it is before 10:00 a.m.) I look forward to hearing from you within five school days of the date from which you receive this letter.
You can contact me at Kathy@memail.com or (310) 333-300I as needed.
Sincerely,
Kathy Jones
