Parent Question

Should I wait until after my child turns 5 to apply for IHSS?

Published: Dec. 20, 2024

If your child is turning 5 soon, there is no need to wait to apply because the IHSS home visit may not be scheduled before your child's 5th birthday anyway.

If your child won't be 5 for several years, you can still apply for IHSS. There is no age limit. Eligibility is based on how much care your child requires compared to a typically developing child of the same age. We recommend checking out our full video resource In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) for Ages 0-5 for tips on the application process, including what to do if an IHSS worker tells you your child is too young.
