Should I write asthma into my child's IEP?
If your child has an IEP and also has asthma, you should make a health plan in collaboration with the school. The details of the health plan should be documented in the IHP. Document in the IEP the situation and plan surrounding the child’s needs so that it is known in case of emergency. If an inhaler is needed, for example, the plan should state one puff or two puffs. Then, it should say what to do if the inhaler doesn’t resolve it. In much the same way, if a child is in diapers, there should be a schedule for toileting or a respectful sign that the child can use to signal the need for the bathroom.
