Parent Question

Should my child in college disclose their disability to their teachers?

Published: Jul. 24, 2025Updated: Aug. 9, 2025

An individual is not required to disclose their disability to a college teacher. However, if your young adult is connected with the college disability office, it may be helpful for them to introduce themselves to each professor and explain that they have accommodations through the disability office.

Some Undivided parents have shared that their children have found it helpful to meet professors at office hours, especially in classes they struggled with, even if just to chat and ask how they got into their line of work or ask for ideas for the future and jobs. They also made it a point to meet with professors or at least email if they had to miss a substantial amount of classes for mental/health reasons.
