Rachel Lambert, PhD, and associate professor in Special Education and Mathematics Education at UCSB and author of Rethinking Disability and Mathematics, explains that functional mathematics should be understood in a way that connects to the world of children. She explains that good math instruction for young children starts with pulling out the mathematics that make sense to them and beginning there.
