What California public benefits might a child with autism level 1 qualify for?
There are a few public benefits programs in California that children with autism may qualify for, but it depends on the child's needs (and sometimes family income).
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is income-based, so being eligible is not just about the child's disability, but also household finances.
In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) eligibility is based not on diagnosis but on the child's support needs and how they compare to a typically developing child of the same age. In addition, the child must have Medi-Cal to qualify for IHSS. A child may qualify for Medi-Cal coverage based on household income, or they might qualify for a waiver if they are a Regional Center client or if they have significant medical needs.
Regional Centers serve individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, but children must demonstrate deficits in certain areas to qualify for services. If Regional Center denies eligibility, it is possible to appeal the denial, especially if Regional Center denies just based on a diagnosis of autism level 1.
Some children with autism level 1 qualify for these programs and others do not; it depends on the areas of deficit and functioning that are seen during the application process.
