What do I do if my homeschool charter won't let me end a service or change service providers if they're not working?
We've heard from some Undivided families that they have difficulty ending or changing a service written into the IEP at their child's homeschool charter. When a child refuses to attend a virtual therapy session, it can feel like the service or the provider is just not working.
A while back, homeschool charters were nailed for not giving appropriate services to children, so they have tightened down and offer a lot of services and can be quite strict. It’s tricky because at a traditional public school, the service provider can approach the child in the classroom, and if the child refuses to go with them for the service, they just mark it down and move on, but with homeschool, it is on the parent to make a child show up. Start collecting your own data about how and why a service is inappropriate for your child. Then, ask for an IEP meeting and show them exactly why this service provider isn’t appropriate for your kid and why your child can’t make progress on their goals. The school has to provide an appropriate education, and this is causing a barrier to the child's learning.
