What do transition to adulthood advocates do?
Published: Nov. 21, 2024
Transition to adulthood advocates are dedicated to helping young people, usually between ages 14 and 24, and their families as they navigate the journey from childhood to adulthood. Advocates offer guidance and resources in areas like education, jobs, healthcare, housing, Regional Center, and legal rights, all aimed at making this big transition smoother.
Here’s what they focus on:
- Building independence: They help young people develop practical skills, like budgeting, decision-making, and self-advocacy, to feel ready for adult life.
- Supporting education and career goals: Transition advocates assist in setting goals for school or work, finding job training, or exploring internships.
- Connecting to services: They help teens and young adults with disabilities move from child-focused services to adult support.
- Rights and legal awareness: Advocates educate families of young people about their legal rights and responsibilities.
Advocates often team up with families, schools, Regional Centers, and community groups to create a strong support network, making sure young people have what they need to confidently step into adulthood.
