What if I want my child to attend a different school than the district recommends?
Published: Jun. 12, 2026Updated: Jun. 12, 2026
The most likely scenario is that the school district will offer your child placement at the school closest to you, known as your home school or neighborhood school. You might be recommended a different school if your child needs a specific placement, such as SDC, that is not offered at your home school.
If you disagree with the district's offered school, meaning you agree with the placement but not the location, it's possible to request a different school. You need to tour the offered location and let your IEP team know why it is not appropriate for your child. See our school tour checklist for tips on what questions to ask during your tour.
