What if my child is fine at school but struggles with homework?
Some children are able to get through the school day but have more challenging behaviors at home or struggle with homework and academics once they leave the school environment.
If the child is fine at school and the issues are just at home, parents might want to ask for an accommodation for reduced or no homework.
Some schools have a homework club, so homework can be done for an hour after school. If reading is a struggle at home, would the child listen to a book on tape on the way to and from school instead? See our article about strategies to help kids who struggle with reading.
Some parents get a tutor or even a high school student who does homework with the student; sometimes, having an outside person makes a positive difference.
If you want to observe your child at school to see how their behaviors and engagement are different than at home, it's recommended that you send someone else to observe in your place. Children be behave differently when their parents are there.
