Parent Question

What if the school says my child can't be included in general education because they need diapers?

Published: Apr. 30, 2025Updated: Jun. 6, 2025

Every child has the right to be fully included at their school. If your child's school is recommending a more restrictive placement based on toileting needs alone, that is not appropriate.

The child's toileting needs should be written in the IEP so that the IEP team can determine the best way for the school to provide support. Some schools ask the child to go to nurse's office for a diaper change or toileting assistance, which is less ideal, while some children have aides for the bathroom. A child with toileting needs doesn't necessarily require a 1:1 aide (unless they have something like colostomy bag), but it depends on the level of support required for them, which should be documented in the IEP.
