What is a sunflower lanyard for?

Published: May. 8, 2026Updated: May. 8, 2026

At many airports in the world, and even locations beyond airports, sunflower lanyards allow someone to signify that they have a hidden disability and may need extra support.

One Undivided parent shared with us that wearing a sunflower lanyard allowed their child to go through disability/ADA lines at the airport and other travel locations. "I hate having to apologize in front of [my child] if maybe he's too loud or if I have to cut a line because he can't handle waiting. It's a discreet way to get additional assistance and support."

Some airports will give you a sunflower lanyard for free if you contact disability services at your local airport and ask for one. You can also purchase one for your child to wear.

"It is widely recognized in certain countries where one doesn't have to apologize for behaviors that seem out of the norm or ask for special assistance," one Undivided parent told us. "Not only was it recognized, but they also asked as we entered if I would like a sensory bag for [my son] or if there was anything they could do to make his experience better."
