What is adaptive skills training (AST)?

Published: Jun. 18, 2026Updated: Jun. 18, 2026

If your child has adaptive skills training (AST) as a Regional Center service or in their Self-Determination Program spending plan, you may want to know what that includes. AST is anything that supports independence, such as how to clean up after themselves, learning their address and phone number, staying safe in the home, navigating the community, etc. In SDP, you can hire a coach to do the delivery of AST services.

For more information about what services are available from Regional Center, see our article Regional Center 101.
