Parent Question

What is Regional Center Status 2?

Published: Apr. 23, 2025

The HCBS-DD Medi-Cal waiver allows Regional Center clients to receive Medi-Cal even if their household income would otherwise be too high to qualify. However, Regional Center clients who are only receiving early intervention services under age 3 (or who have provisional eligibility status under age 5) are not typically eligible for the Medi-Cal waiver.

In order for a child under age 3 to qualify for the Medi-Cal waiver, they need to have a diagnosed developmental disability that will continue to qualify them for Regional Center services after age 3 under the Lanterman Act. Often, this means having complex medical issues in addition to their diagnosis. This is sometimes known as Status 2.
