What is self-advocacy?

Published: Nov. 21, 2024

Self-advocacy is the action of representing one’s interests or views. An individual with disabilities practicing self-advocacy takes the steps to gain knowledge and empower them to obtain services that are legally theirs. There are many outlets that focus and contribute to the development of self-advocacy. These include some nonprofits that assist with specialized job placement, college placement, career counseling, or independent living skills. A few of these are highlighted below to reflect this avenue of advocacy for individuals transitioning to adulthood to achieve. Many offer specific classes, online resources, or 1:1 coaches to promote and teach this skill.
