What is the difference between employment support from Regional Center and the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)?
While both Regional Center and the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) are California agencies that support people with disabilities, they have different roles and responsibilities when it comes to helping clients find and maintain jobs.
The Regional Center provides employment support for clients, but it doesn’t have a mandate to seek out jobs or support people finding a job. DOR provides the best support for the client finding a job, and DOR needs to know if the person is a Regional Center client because the two organizations can work together.
DOR is completely funding the support to help the person become employed. This can look like paying for interview and job clothing, funding college or trade education that leads to employment, coordinating work incentives, and counseling on how to maximize benefits while working.
If an individual with a disability is not a Regional Center client, they can still receive these benefits from the DOR. However, once the person has a job for three months, the DOR starts the exit process for services. For Regional Center clients, their Regional Center can take over services when the DOR is done, and the DOR has to support Regional Center clients for longer than three months.
