Parent Question

What public benefits could help me pay for vehicle modification?

Published: May. 30, 2025Updated: Jun. 6, 2025

If you want to modify your vehicle to accommodate your child's equipment, such as a wheelchair, the first resource to use is your medical insurance. Contact your health plan to find out what kind of vehicle modification they might fund and any dollar amount or limitations.

If your insurance denies funding for vehicle modification, you can bring that denial to Regional Center if your child is a client. Whether your Regional Center will fund it and to what extent is based on their purchase of service standards, so look on your Regional Center's website or ask your service coordinator about what may be covered. In some cases, Regional Center will fund the purchase of an accessible vehicle, but again it depends on the purchase of service standards.
